Which Wax Should I Choose?

Which Wax Should I Choose?

Choosing the right wax is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when creating candles. The wrong wax can lead to poor adhesion, frosting, sinkholes, weak scent throw or difficult unmoulding.

At Craft HQ, we offer a wide selection of waxes, each designed for a specific purpose. To help you choose confidently, here’s your complete guide to selecting the right wax for every type of creation.

Poured Candles (Container Candles)

For container candles, your wax must:

Adhere well to the sides, provide smooth tops, offers excellent fragrance throw.

Soy Wax for Poured Candles

Soy container wax is a favourite for beginners and professionals alike.

Why choose it?

Crystallises at around 42°C, excellent adhesion to glass and tins, medium fragrance diffusion, slow, even burn.

Perfect for: everyday container candles with a smooth, creamy finish.

Olive Container Wax

Olive wax is ideal if you want a glossy, refined finish.

Why choose it?

Working and pouring temperature around 60°C, quick and easy to work with, excellent adhesion, smooth, shiny finish without white residue.

Perfect for: premium-looking candles with a polished appearance.

Fully Refined Paraffin Wax

Fully refined medical-grade paraffin wax is valued for its reliable performance and excellent scent release.

Why Choose It?

Highly refined and purified, smooth and consistent finish, excellent fragrance throw, easy and reliable to work with across batches.

Perfect for: strongly scented container candles with a clean professional finish.

Moulded Candles

For moulded candles, shrinkage is key. The wax must contract slightly as it cools to allow easy demoulding and retain fine details.

Rapeseed Wax for Wax Melts & Moulded Candles

Why choose it?

Excellent hardness, easy demoulding, holds intricate mould details, glossy, dry finish.

Perfect for: shaped candles, decorative pieces, and detailed silicone moulds.

Rapeseed & Coconut Wax Blend

Why choose it?

High thermal stability, very malleable, easy unmoulding, excellent fragrance retention.

Perfect for: sculpted candles that need both structure and strong scent throw.

Wax Melts

Wax melts need both good shrinkage and precise mould conformity.

Soy Wax for Wax Melts

Why choose it?

Crystallises at a low temperature, remains workable for longer, good shrinkage, adapts beautifully to mould detail.

Perfect for: softer, creamier wax melt finishes.

Rapeseed Wax for Wax Melts

Why choose it?

Excellent shrinkage, high hardness, precise mould definition, glossy, dry finish.

Perfect for: sharp-edged snap bars and highly detailed shapes.

Wax Whipped Cream

For whipped wax, a low melting point is essential. You need time to whip and pipe before it sets.

Soy Wax for Poured Candles

Why choose it?

Melting point: 51–54°C, does not set too quickly, smooth, airy texture.

Perfect for: fluffy, realistic whipped wax toppings.

Sunflower Wax for Poured Candles

Why choose it?

Low crystallisation temperature, bright white finish, very smooth texture, melting point around 46°C.

Perfect for: ultra-realistic whipped cream effects with a clean white colour.

Wax Crumble

For crumble effects, your wax must be malleable but easy to break.

Soy Wax

Why choose it?

Gentle crystallisation, slightly softer, richer finish, good shrinkage.

Perfect for: buttery, “cake-like” crumble textures.

Rapeseed Wax

Why choose it?

Crystallises quickly, excellent shrinkage, crumbly, drier texture.

Perfect for: crisp, biscuit-style crumble effects.

Tea Lights & Small Containers

Tea lights require excellent adhesion due to their small diameter.

Coconut Container Wax

Why choose it?

Excellent container adhesion, medium fragrance throw, smooth finish.

Perfect for: tealights and small glass or metal containers.

Final Thoughts

Each wax has its own personality, strengths and ideal application.

Before starting your project, ask yourself:

Is this a container or moulded candle? Do I need shrinkage or adhesion? Do I want a glossy or creamy finish? Is this decorative or functional?

Choosing the right wax from the beginning will dramatically improve your results and reduce frustration.  Now that you know which wax to choose for every creation… it’s time to get crafting!
